Make no bones about it…

On May 30, in Kingston, Ontario, a group of community members and researchers got together to learn about rehabilitation, health and aging at CIHR’s Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis’s most recent Café Scientifique. The Café, entitled, “Broken, Busted and (a Bit) Worn Down: Rehab science supporting movement for improved health and aging”, explored the importance of physical activity for the maintenance of strong bones, and the role of rehabilitation in maintaining good musculoskeletal health.

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition. It’s caused by a glitch in the immune system that makes skin cells reproduce must faster than normal. The cells pile up on the skin’s surface, forming itchy red and white patches. Up to 30% of people who have psoriasis will get psoriatic arthritis, which causes swelling and pain in the joints. There is no cure, and controlling the symptoms can be a frustrating experience. (more…)

What is life like for the nearly one million Canadians with psoriasis? How does the condition affect them physically and emotionally? And where they can turn for support?

Well, Allan Stordy has lived with psoriasis for over two decades. In this video Allan talks about how psoriasis has affected his life, and what others can do to stay positive as they cope with the challenges of the condition.

We are delighted to have Allan as one of the speakers at our Cafe on June 1 in St. John’s. He is president and chair of the board of the Canadian Skin Patient Alliance, a group that provides education, information and support to people with skin conditions. He also helps guide research directions as a board member of the CIHR Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis.

Café scientifiques started in the late-20th century as an informal discussion about scientific subjects. They were never intended to be lectures. The same holds true for CIHR Café scientifiques. They provide insight into health-related issues, and in turn provoke questions and provide answers. Over the past few years, CIHR has held Cafés all across the country, on topics ranging from the human genome to healthy aging.

Now we want to expand the discussion.

For the next few weeks, we will be blogging about our upcoming Café on adult stem cells and regenerative medicine. The event will be held on November 3rd in Toronto, but even if you can’t make it there, we want you to share your thoughts and questions here. And stay tuned for more information about the researchers who will be at the Café!
